China and Philippines urge risk reduction in South China Sea talks
Diplomats also discussed maritime disputes, security and law enforcement, along with trade and investment cooperation.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Philippine Foreign Secretary Maria Theresa Lazaro in Manila and both sides emphasized the need to reduce the risk of miscalculation and maintain stability in the South China Sea, according to SCMP Economy.
The meeting, held on the sidelines of ASEAN foreign ministers in Manila, was described by the Philippine foreign ministry as candid, comprehensive and constructive, and it marked the first formal talks between the two top diplomats since Lazaro took office last year.
SCMP Economy reports the discussions covered maritime disputes, security and law enforcement, plus trade and investment cooperation, as well as tourism and other regional issues.
The Philippine side also reiterated its protest against alleged violent actions by China Coast Guard personnel near the Second Thomas Shoal, known as Renai Jiao in China and Ayungin Shoal in the Philippines.
