England to cap most single bus fares starting January 2027

The new scheme applies to participating buses outside London and is expected to cost more than £500 million, funded partly by reallocating £454 million from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.

England will introduce a cap on most single bus fares on participating services outside London starting January 1, 2027, according to BBC Business.

The BBC spoke with residents who said the change could reduce day-to-day transport costs. One rider who commutes between Bedworth in Warwickshire and Leamington Spa estimated current bus travel costs at £58 per week, or more than £3,000 per year, and said the cap would save about £500 a year.

Other interviewees highlighted differing impacts based on where they live and which operator runs their route. In Herefordshire near the England Wales border, one resident said the cap would not affect her because her bus service is provided by a Welsh company, and she reported that a single fare on her bus is at least £4.20 even though the journey is “entirely in England.”

The government said the program is expected to cost more than £500 million and would be paid for by reprioritizing government funds. BBC Business also noted that the announcement includes reallocation of £454 million from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, while the opposition questioned whether the source of funding had been fully specified.
