Lightning Labs releases Wavelength alpha for self-custodial Bitcoin payments

The toolkit lets apps and AI agents send self-custodial Bitcoin payments through an API, with unilateral exit to on-chain at any time.

Lightning Labs, the company behind core Lightning Network software including Lnd, Loop, and Taproot Assets, has released the alpha version of Wavelength, a developer toolkit aimed at making Bitcoin payments easier to integrate into apps and AI agents.

The platform is designed so developers do not have to run nodes, manage channels, or source liquidity. Wavelength includes a self-custodial wallet embedded in web or mobile apps, where users control their own keys on-device.

Lightning Labs says Wavelength supports on-chain Bitcoin payments, Lightning payments via atomic swaps, and an off-chain settlement layer that can settle transfers in batches to the blockchain. It uses standard BOLT 11 invoices, so the wallet interoperates with the existing Lightning Network from the first integration.

According to the announcement, Lightning payments route through Loop for deep, reliable liquidity, while a coordination service settles transfers without taking unilateral control of funds. The company also says users can perform a unilateral exit to on-chain Bitcoin at any time via an explicit exit command, and that the Wavelength SDK is open source.
