Pan Am Clipper Endeavor wreck found off Puerto Rico after 1952 crash

Searchers have located the wreckage of a Pan Am flight that crashed into the ocean off Puerto Rico in 1952, an accident that killed 52 people and later helped reshape commercial aviation safety procedures. The aircraft, a DC-4 known as the Clipper Endeavor, suffered a hard landing after losing engine power shortly after takeoff, and investigators learned that the plane sank within minutes.
According to the Associated Press, survivors said they made it through the landing but panic followed as passengers struggled to find life vests and crew faced difficulty pulling out life rafts. The discovery of the wreckage, found last month using an autonomous sonar drone at depths of more than 600 metres, could provide renewed hope for families affected by other ocean crashes.
The report says the crash became a catalyst for improvements to aviation safety, including better flotation equipment and passenger safety briefings delivered before takeoff. Aviation safety expert John Cox said the incident helped drive the safety steps that many travelers rely on today.
