Targeted surveillance at Hong Kong and UAE hubs could speed variant detection
A University of Hong Kong study says focusing on two major transit hubs could detect new variants about three days earlier without shifting resources from other regions.
Targeted viral surveillance of transit passengers at Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates could speed global detection of new coronavirus variants by about three days, according to a University of Hong Kong study highlighted by SCMP Economy.
Professor Leo Poon Lit-man, chair of public health virology at HKU, said strengthening local surveillance across regions remains the foundation of global health security and that the approach is designed to stay ahead of emerging threats.
In his remarks on a radio programme, Poon said the strategy does not require redistributing resources to different regions, instead leveraging surveillance capacity already present at two busy international aviation hubs.
