US announces civilian nuclear agreements with Saudi Arabia
The US says the pact will include bilateral safeguards and could involve a US uranium enrichment facility in Saudi Arabia, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The United States announced two agreements with Saudi Arabia to establish a civilian nuclear program in the Gulf kingdom, with US officials saying the deal includes safeguards aimed at nuclear non-proliferation.
According to the US Energy Department, the agreements, titled “peaceful nuclear cooperation” and “bilateral safeguards,” were signed by US Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Saudi counterpart Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman.
The department said the framework would support a decades long, multibillion dollar partnership that advances economic and strategic objectives, including non-proliferation.
The Wall Street Journal reported that a provision in the agreement could allow US companies to build a uranium enrichment facility in Saudi Arabia, while the Energy Department statement did not mention enrichment and did not comment when asked by Agence France-Presse.
