30-year mortgage rate hits highest level in more than a year

Mortgage News Daily says the 30-year fixed rate index rose to 6.85%, the highest since June 23, 2025.

Mortgage rates moved higher again, leaving the 30-year fixed rate index at its highest level in more than a year, according to Mortgage News Daily. The outlet said the daily 30-year fixed rate index rose from 6.77% yesterday to 6.85% today.

Mortgage News Daily attributed the jump to a month of steady weakness during July, which helped push rates to the top end after the prior session. The outlet said the jump was not larger than the increase seen on Monday, but both moves were described as above average and taking rates in the wrong direction.

Despite the latest uptick, Mortgage News Daily pointed to a “silver lining,” saying the period from July 2025 through February 2026 was the best run in the mortgage world since rates began rising in 2022, with steady declines and relatively low volatility.

The outlet added that even with today’s higher level, rates remain in the lower half of the overall post-2022 range and argued the “highest in more than a year” framing reflects the past year more than the current absolute level. It also noted June as a proof of concept that rates can respond favorably if peace breaks out again.
