BitMEX will shut down September 23 and stop new account sign-ups
BitMEX will keep trading running until August 26, when it bars new positions and shifts to reduce-only before it force-closes remaining trades at the September 23 cutoff.
Crypto derivatives exchange BitMEX said it will shut down its platform on September 23, 2026, and has already stopped new account registrations. Decrypt reports that the operator, HDR Global Trading, attributed the decision to a strategic review of the business and the wider crypto industry.
BitMEX told users to close positions and withdraw funds before the deadline. The company said operations will cease at 04:00 UTC on September 23, and users will be able to log in after the shutdown to withdraw balances, though balances left parked will eventually be charged a monthly account fee.
The exchange outlined a wind-down timeline: trading continues as normal until August 26, when it will bar new positions and allow only traders to reduce existing ones. After that, BitMEX said it will force-close open positions to end the market in an orderly fashion, with any positions left open at the deadline closed automatically.
BitMEX, founded in 2014 by Arthur Hayes, Benjamin Delo, and Samuel Reed, is among the oldest crypto derivatives venues. Decrypt notes the exchange is known for launching the perpetual swap in 2016, and it said it had operated more than 11 years without losing user funds to a hack, while also referencing its later legal and compliance history.
