China and US foreign ministers emphasize stability ahead of Xi trip

The talks focused on President Xi Jinping’s upcoming visit to the United States rather than recent US accusations, with China characterizing the discussion as pragmatic and constructive.

China and the United States emphasized stability in a meeting between their foreign ministers, with discussions centered on Chinese President Xi Jinping’s upcoming trip to the US, according to SCMP Economy.

SCMP Economy reports that the two sides took a largely cordial tone, avoiding a direct focus on US allegations about election interference by Beijing that had been raised by US President Donald Trump.

China’s Wang Yi said the conversation was “pragmatic, positive and constructive,” in a statement issued after the call, SCMP Economy said.

The foreign ministers’ focus on Xi’s visit suggests both governments are trying to manage tensions through diplomacy rather than escalating the dispute in the near term, SCMP Economy added.
