China begins two-day live-fire drills near Taiwan Strait island

The drills run from 2200 GMT to 1000 GMT each day around Dongshan Island, according to Forexlive.

China has announced it has started two-day live-fire drills in parts of the Taiwan Strait around Dongshan Island, bordering Guangdong province, Forexlive reports.

The drills are scheduled from 2200 GMT to 1000 GMT each day, a timing the outlet links to recent US China diplomacy.

Forexlive says the move comes a day after talks between US Secretary of State Rubio and China Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Manila, where Rubio opposed China’s deployment of coast guard vessels near Taiwan and criticized recent encroachments near the island.

The outlet also notes the drills follow earlier large-scale war games around Taiwan in December, shortly after the US unveiled a record $11.1 billion arms package for Taiwan, and it ties the latest announcement to continuing US concerns over strategic stability and Taiwan.
