China holds two-day live-fire drill in waters near Taiwan Strait

The drills run daily from 6am to 6pm Thursday and Friday and are set within zones that remain within 12km of China’s mainland coast, according to a Beijing navigation notice.

Beijing launched a two-day live-fire drill in the Taiwan Strait on Thursday, scheduled to run from 6am to 6pm on both Thursday and Friday, according to a navigation warning issued by China’s maritime safety administration.

The notice said the drill covers areas east and south of Dongshan Island in Fujian province, with all drill zones within 12km of the mainland coast, while Friday’s activity takes place in a nearshore maritime zone south of Dongshan Island that is closer to the coastline.

The drills coincide with the end of a week-long fisheries resource survey in waters east of Taiwan, which China’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs said it had completed to lay groundwork for understanding conditions in areas described as under China’s jurisdiction.

The SCMP Economy also noted that People’s Liberation Army live-fire drills typically peak in mid and late July as the PLA works to improve capacities in harsh environments, including extreme heat.
