China warns Philippines of “bitter consequences” after South China Sea clash

The warning came during Beijing’s third straight protest over the confrontation at Second Thomas Shoal, ahead of an ASEAN foreign ministers meeting in Manila.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi warned the Philippines that Manila would “bear the bitter consequences” if it tried to provoke Beijing with the help of other countries, according to SCMP Economy.

Wang delivered the message during talks in Manila with Theresa Lazaro, the Philippines’ top diplomat, as he lodged a “strong protest” over what China called an aggressive act involving the ramming of a Chinese law enforcement vessel at a disputed reef in the South China Sea on Monday.

The dispute marked the third day of protests from Beijing over the confrontation at Second Thomas Shoal, involving a Chinese coastguard vessel and two Philippine Navy rubber boats.

SCMP Economy added that the incident unfolded a day before the Association of Southeast Asian Nations foreign ministers’ meeting in Manila, as ties between Beijing and Manila remain tense amid frequent clashes in the disputed waters and the Philippines’ closer defense and security links with the United States and Tokyo.
