Coinbase lets businesses accept payments from AI agents via x402

The rollout lets merchants receive payments in USDC through Coinbase Payments, and adds real-time agent order visibility in Coinbase for users.

CoinDesk reports that U.S.-listed crypto exchange Coinbase is rolling out a new way for businesses using Coinbase Business to accept payments from AI agents. The feature is built around Coinbase's x402 protocol, which the exchange developed and incubated, and it is designed to connect agent checkout payments with existing business infrastructure.

According to the report, Coinbase says a business can let an agent pay in USDC with no extra setup, powered by Coinbase Payments. Coinbase positioned the change as closing gaps in what it describes as the AI agentic payments workflow by providing an agent-friendly checkout flow for businesses.

For Coinbase users, the exchange is also adding new trading views for agents, including a live order list that streams an agent’s open and active orders in real time, with status, price, and size so users can supervise activity. Coinbase also described the agent experience as using real-time market data and being able to act on conditions autonomously.

The exchange further said developers can use packaged infrastructure via the Coinbase Developer Platform, including an x402 SDK. Coinbase said it enables builders to support x402 payments and agent interactions within its developer ecosystem.
