EU fines Google €890m over Digital Markets Act search and app violations
The European Commission split the penalty into €460m for search and €430m for the app store, and ordered Google to change how it displays third-party services and lets developers steer users to outside offers.
Google was fined a total of €890m by the European Commission for breaches of the EU’s Digital Markets Act tied to its search and app store services. The Commission said the company prioritized its own services, including shopping and hotel deals, ahead of rivals in search results.
The regulator also said Google violated the DMA by blocking app developers from steering consumers to cheaper offers on websites or through alternative app stores. As part of the decision, the Commission ordered Google to treat third-party services in its search results in a “fair and non-discriminatory manner” and to allow app developers to make offers outside Google’s app store.
The Commission said Google has already begun testing changes to how it displays search results that feature its own services, describing those efforts as “substantial progress towards compliance.” A senior official said consumers would be direct beneficiaries, while noting that research results would have to change across Europe.
Commentators cited the scale of the fine and the need for compliance. The decision also landed shortly before a window for temporary global tariffs expires, and an EU senior official said the bloc had no knowledge of how Donald Trump might react, adding that the timing was not connected to US actions.
