Farmers in Punjab march toward Delhi over proposed US trade deal
Protesters said they were opposing a US deal they described as “secret,” amid concerns it could shift agricultural exports away from the US-China trade conflict.
Housing and market attention is turning to India, where thousands of farmers from Punjab marched toward Delhi to oppose what they described as a secret trade deal with the United States, according to the SCMP Economy.
The protests reflect domestic pressure on Prime Minister Narendra Modi as Washington considers redirecting agricultural exports displaced by the US-China trade conflict, potentially placing India at the center of those efforts.
SCMP Economy also reported that Sadanand Dhume, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations for India, Pakistan and South Asia, said Modi faces a perfect storm of geopolitical turmoil alongside domestic political unrest.
The outlet said the controversy is renewing questions about India’s broader strategic alignment with Washington in the context of competition with Beijing.
