Greece approves multibillion-dollar “Achilles Shield” air defense dome
The deal allocates about €3.0 billion to Israeli-made air and drone defense systems out of a broader €4.2 billion defense spending package.
Greece approved a multibillion-dollar purchase of Israeli anti-missile, anti-aircraft, and anti-drone weaponry to build an “Achilles Shield” protective air defense dome, according to Agence France-Presse.
About €3.0 billion of a wider €4.2 billion spending spree will go toward Israeli-made systems, a defense ministry source told AFP on condition of anonymity, citing Greece’s KYSEA foreign affairs and defense council approval of major contracts.
The plan also includes buys of C-390 Millennium transport aircraft from Brazil’s Embraer and additional systems such as Heron drones from Israel, Apache helicopter missiles, British-made Victa stealth watercraft, and frigate sonar equipment, with Greek defense firms contributing €700 million to the project.
AFP noted that Israel’s air-defense network, including the Iron Dome designed to intercept short-range rockets and missiles, has been used heavily during the Middle East war.
