Herzog & de Meuron donates 200+ archival items to Hong Kong’s M+

M+ said the second donation follows an initial 2023 gift and will be followed by an exhibition opening Sept. 12.

International architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron has given Hong Kong’s M+ museum a second batch of archival material for its West Kowloon Cultural District campus, including models, sketches and drawings.

The museum said the new donation includes more than 200 items, following an earlier 2023 contribution that involved a section model of the National Stadium, known as the “Bird’s Nest.”

Herzog & de Meuron is credited with designing the M+ building and other major projects, including the Bird’s Nest for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, as well as the Tai Kwun heritage centre and work tied to Tate Modern in London, according to the report.

M+ said the accompanying exhibition, “Herzog & de Meuron: In Focus,” will open on Sept. 12 and will feature the donated models, drawings, material samples and prototypes shown in replicas of wooden vitrines designed for the firm’s open storage of archival holdings in Basel.
