Hitler’s birthplace in Austria reopens as a police station
Austria’s government spent about €20 million to renovate the site, and a memorial stone with an anti-fascism message will remain outside the building.
Adolf Hitler’s birthplace in Braunau am Inn, Austria, has reopened as a police station in an effort to reduce the building’s appeal to people who visit it in admiration of the Nazi dictator, according to reporting from the Associated Press.
Austria’s Interior Minister Gerhard Karner said during the ceremony that the country, as well as state and regional authorities, is confronting the “terrible heritage” connected to the site, and that the house and its address are part of that commitment.
The renovation took several years and cost around €20 million, Austrian news agency APA reported. Hitler was born in the building on April 20, 1889, and his family later moved to residences in Braunau and then Passau in southern Germany.
A memorial stone is to remain outside the house with an inscription that calls for freedom and democracy and says “Never again fascism,” with a line noting that millions of the dead serve as a reminder.
