Hunger strike ends for Indian activist over exam cheating allegations
The protests demanding Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resign will continue, with allegations tied to exam leaks affecting about 2 million students and linked to several student suicides.
Indian activist Sonam Wangchuk ended a 26-day hunger strike after protesters alleged leaked medical entrance exam papers enabled cheating, Reuters reported. Demonstrations demanding the education minister’s resignation are set to continue, framing it as a major youth-led challenge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government.
Protests are led by the self named Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) movement. CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke said the demonstrations will continue until Dharmendra Pradhan resigns, arguing Wangchuk’s sacrifice should not be ignored.
Wangchuk said on social media that he broke his fast in the presence of two federal ministers at the urging of members of parliament, after what he described as a long negotiation over conditions and concerns about possible violence. He promised to share more details in a video soon.
The allegations focus on leaked exam papers that protesters say affected about 2 million students in May, and are linked by protesters to several student suicides. Reuters added that Pradhan, in his first comments since the resignation demands, said the government is committed to addressing concerns and reforming exams.
