Philippines advances cross-border power link with Indonesia
The plan would require coordination either bilaterally with Indonesia or through an ASEAN forum, as Manila also faces rising electricity demand and higher power costs.
The Philippines is moving ahead with plans for a cross-border electricity grid with Indonesia to bolster energy security amid soaring domestic electricity costs and growing regional power demand, according to SCMP Economy.
Energy Undersecretary Felix William Fuentebella said the concept could involve routing Indonesian power links through the southern Philippines, but it would require close coordination either directly with Indonesia or through a multilateral ASEAN forum.
SCMP Economy adds that Manila has been pushing the initiative as this year’s ASEAN chair and that officials at this week’s ASEAN Foreign Ministerial Meetings issued a joint statement expressing grave concern about renewed US and Iran tensions and calling for the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
