Tesla reports $112 million unrealized crypto loss as digital assets slide

The unrealized loss cut Tesla GAAP earnings for common shareholders by $87 million after tax, while adjusted EBITDA was held at $3.273 billion by a reconciliation add-back.

CryptoSlate reports Tesla took a $112 million crypto paper loss in the second quarter as the value of its digital assets declined. The unrealized loss reduced earnings for common stockholders by $87 million after tax, equivalent to $0.02 per diluted share.

Tesla’s Q2 shareholder update put the carrying value of its digital assets at $674 million as of June 30, 2026, down from $786 million at March 31, 2026. CryptoSlate notes the earlier March 31 filing showed Bitcoin as the majority holding, including 11,509 BTC acquired for $386 million.

The outlet also highlights that Tesla’s accounting treatment flows through GAAP net income each reporting period, with fair value changes recognized in earnings. Separately, Tesla’s adjusted EBITDA reconciliation added back the full $112 million digital asset loss, leaving adjusted EBITDA at $3.273 billion, meaning the paper loss affected GAAP reporting but not the company’s preferred measure.

CryptoSlate adds that the $674 million digital-asset balance was about 0.454% of Tesla’s $148.524 billion in total assets at quarter end. The article says Tesla did not disclose a coin count or any digital asset dispositions in the June 30 deck, and it points to the next primary filing as key for any updated transaction or holdings detail.
