US imposes new tariffs on 60 countries, including China and EU
Tariff rates range from 10% to 12.5%, starting hours before a 10% blanket levy was set to expire.
The United States imposed a new round of tariffs late Thursday covering 60 countries, including China, Japan, South Korea, India and multiple European Union member states, just hours before a temporary 10.0% blanket levy was due to expire, according to SCMP Economy.
The new tariffs, set at between 10.0% and 12.5%, are linked to a Section 301 investigation into forced labor. The USTR said existing measures have not kept goods made with forced labor out of supply chains.
China is facing a 12.5% tariff rate, while Japan, South Korea, Switzerland and the European Union face tariffs ranging from 10.0% to 12.5%. Countries such as Canada, Mexico, India, Indonesia and the United Kingdom face 10.0% tariffs on top of other US import levies.
SCMP Economy reports that experts view the forced labor allegations as a pretext for tariffs tied to President Donald Trump’s broader America-first trade agenda, and notes that another Section 301 investigation remains ongoing, focused on excess industrial capacity across 16 economies.
