US to impose 10% to 12.5% tariffs on forced-labor import claims

The duties, covering about 99.4% of US imports from roughly 60 partners, start Friday as an earlier 10% temporary tax expires.

The United States is set to impose new tariffs on around 60 trading partners that account for the vast majority of US imports, after claims that they failed to properly stop forced labor in supply chains, BBC Business reports.

The new duties will range from 10% to 12.5% and begin on Friday, when a temporary 10% tax on foreign goods introduced earlier this year expires.

According to the outlet, the tariffs are aimed at key economic partners including the UK, EU, Canada, Japan, and India, and they are part of an escalation in the global trade fight that has been renewed since President Donald Trump returned to office.

BBC Business also notes the move follows a US Supreme Court ruling earlier this year that many emergency-power tariffs were illegally enacted, leading the administration to pursue other legal avenues, including Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, as well as prior use of Section 338 to impose 50% tariffs on certain Canadian products.
