US to impose tariffs on imports from about 60 trading partners

The duties, set to start on Friday, range from 10% to 12.5% and are part of a broader tariff escalation after a US Supreme Court ruling on emergency measures.

The United States is imposing new tariffs on imports from around 60 trading partners, targeting countries over claims they failed to properly stop forced labour, according to BBC Business. The tariffs are scheduled to take effect on Friday.

The duties range from 10% to 12.5% and cover key economic partners including the UK, EU, Canada, Japan, and India. The BBC report says the move is the latest escalation in a broader global trade dispute that intensified after Donald Trump returned to office in January last year.

BBC Business reports that the Supreme Court ruled earlier this year that many tariffs imposed under emergency powers were illegally enacted. The administration has since sought other legal routes to advance its trade policy.

The White House says the tariffs are intended to protect American workers and ensure fair competition, while economists warn that higher tariff costs can raise prices for everyday goods. The report also notes the US Trade Representative is investigating 16 countries for manufacturing overcapacity, which could open the door to additional duties later this year.
