White House links Saudi nuclear deal approval to recognizing Israel

The White House said the deal would be approved only if Saudi Arabia joins the Abraham Accords, and it would exclude enrichment for non-military nuclear use.

The White House raised doubts about a newly signed US-Saudi civil nuclear deal, saying approval is contingent on Saudi Arabia recognizing Israel under the 2020 Abraham Accords initiative, according to SCMP Economy.

In a post, US President Donald Trump said the civil nuclear deal would be approved but is subject to Saudi Arabia joining the Abraham Accords, adding that the agreement would not include enrichment and would cover only non-military uses of nuclear energy.

The outlet reported that the new condition immediately cast doubt on the agreement because Riyadh has long refused to normalize ties with Israel without a credible pathway to Palestinian statehood, a stance analysts said has hardened since the Gaza war.

SCMP Economy also said White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt reiterated that the demand has been discussed by the president repeatedly with Gulf and Arab allies, positioning it as a way to prevent nuclear proliferation while addressing concerns from lawmakers and voters.
