Cathay to raise passenger fuel surcharges by up to 41% in August

The increase, effective August 1, comes after jet fuel averaged US$149.4 per barrel in the week ending July 16, compared with US$127.1 the prior week.

Cathay Pacific Airways will raise passenger fuel surcharges on most flights by up to 41% starting August 1, citing escalating tensions in the Middle East, according to SCMP Economy.

The airline said the higher passenger and cargo fuel surcharges will follow a brief period of declines after prices peaked in April, and it described the move as the first surcharge increase since then while noting levels remain below the peak.

SCMP Economy reports Cathay linked the adjustment to International Air Transport Association data showing the global average jet fuel price rose to US$149.4 per barrel for the week ending July 16, up from US$127.1 the previous week and US$119.1 for the week ending July 3.

On specific routes, Cathay said fuel surcharges between Hong Kong and the South Asian subcontinent will increase 41.3%, from HK$448 to HK$633, while routes between Hong Kong and mainland China will rise 20%. Surcharges for flights to the South West Pacific, North America, Europe, the Middle East and Africa are set to increase by about 41.1%.
