England business rates cut excludes cafes as pub and venue relief expands

Business owners in England say a targeted business rates relief package for high street venues is leaving cafes behind, despite support also being aimed at pubs, social clubs, and live music venues.

According to The Guardian, specialty coffee businesses that rely on foot traffic, including suppliers such as Sheba Coffee, say they are being pressured by increased energy bills and a rising cost of living, while consumers are cutting back on discretionary purchases like coffee.

The article says the program, roughly valued at 100 million pounds a year, will take effect next April and is estimated to save a typical pub about 1,100 pounds next year, a level that cafe operators argue could have helped them expand and hire.

Inclusive and community-focused venues are also concerned, with a Dialogue Cafe founder saying rising input costs for coffee beans have already forced price pressure, and that steering incentives to competitors could reduce customer visits.
