FBI complaint links Wilkins to Steam malware that drained crypto
The complaint alleges the campaign infected about 8,000 devices, accessed about 80 crypto wallets, and stole at least $220,000.
CryptoSlate reports that a 15-page federal criminal complaint describes how investigators used a mix of blockchain tracing and digital forensics to identify an alleged financier and marketer, Zyaire Dontaevious Zamarion Wilkins, in connection with a Steam malware campaign.
According to the complaint, federal agents arrested Wilkins, 21, in Florida on July 14, with the case filing made the following day. Prosecutors allege the eight-game campaign infected approximately 8,000 devices, accessed about 80 cryptocurrency wallets, and stole at least $220,000, with Wilkins accused of supplying funding and helping market the games.
The filing says investigators traced payments tied to messaging seized from a co-conspirator, including a Bitcoin address that allegedly received an approximately $10,000 payment on the day it was supplied. It also alleges that funds flowed from that address to Bitrefill, whose gift card purchasing records were linked to an account registered with an email address that investigators then examined through Google records.
The complaint further alleges that investigators later found a Monero seed phrase tied to roughly $382,000 in cumulative transaction activity, and that the games were promoted through platforms including Discord, Telegram, X, and LinkedIn. Prosecutors also describe bots as identifying people with large crypto holdings for targeted messages, and they cite discussions about spending $10,000 on a remote-access trojan and embedding malware in the games.
