Laura Loomer meets Zelensky after reversing her stance on Ukraine
The visit comes after Loomer posted about experiencing her first air raid in Ukraine and acknowledged prior comments about the war were “not very nice.”
Laura Loomer, a close ally of US President Donald Trump and a conservative social media influencer, met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Ukraine on Thursday, after she publicly reversed her prior stance on the war, according to reporting by the SCMP Economy citing the Associated Press.
SCMP Economy reports Loomer had previously minimized Russia’s invasion and amplified Russian propaganda to her nearly 2 million followers, but this week she said she had “just experienced my first air raid in Ukraine,” writing that the sirens were “everyday for every Ukrainian,” and that earlier remarks about not caring about the conflict were not kind.
The outlet also notes that Loomer had criticized US support for Ukraine’s defense in past comments, including language Russia has used to justify its invasion.
SCMP Economy adds that US skepticism toward Ukraine has been shared by other conservative figures, and it references long running tensions within the Republican Party over continued military aid, including clashes involving Vice-President J.D. Vance, Trump, and Zelensky during an Oval Office meeting.
