LNG exporters eye Cambodia to fuel first LNG-fueled power plant

Cambodia plans a 900 MW LNG power station, and its energy minister said LNG would help diversify electricity generation.

OilPrice reports that major liquefied natural gas exporters are exploring supplying fuel to Cambodia’s first LNG-fueled power station as the country expands its generation mix.

Cambodia’s energy minister, Keo Rottanak, said the United States, Australia, Canada, and some Southeast Asian countries are among those interested in providing LNG for the planned project, according to the outlet.

OilPrice also cited data described in the interview, saying Cambodia gets 63% of its electricity from renewables, while the International Energy Agency estimates the country generates over 50% of its energy from hydrocarbons, including coal, oil, and oil products.

The story adds that hydropower accounts for 4.6% of total power generation, biofuels and waste make up 28.7%, and solar and wind contribute a tiny portion, while LNG is positioned by Rottanak as a diversification tool even as regional LNG prices remain high, per OilPrice.
