London police say neighborhood crime fell 14% year to June

Metropolitan Police cited a 14% drop in “neighbourhood crime” for the year to June and reported even steeper declines in Westminster and Camden, as Mayor Sadiq Khan pushed back on social media narratives about rising danger.

London’s mayor and Metropolitan Police leadership pointed to a decline in recorded “neighbourhood crime” to reassure tourists and counter online claims that the city is becoming more dangerous, according to the Associated Press via SCMP Economy.

The Metropolitan Police said “neighbourhood crime”, which includes phone theft, pickpocketing, residential burglary and vehicle crime, fell 14% in the year to June.

In Westminster borough, home to major tourist areas including Parliament, Soho and Leicester Square, those crimes fell by more than a third, while they were down by a quarter in neighbouring Camden, another tourist hotspot.

SCMP Economy also reported that Mayor Sadiq Khan said social media has amplified stories of London “decline” and “danger” over the past two years, and he argued the online narrative is being fueled by bot farms and by state actors from Russia and China, along with influencers in the United States.
