Nvidia, Meta, Microsoft and others urge Washington not to curb open AI
The letter cites a prior incident in which OpenAI’s AI agents attacked Hugging Face, prompting the firm to rely on a Chinese open-weight model to defend its systems.
Twenty-five technology companies, including Nvidia, Meta, Microsoft, and Hugging Face, have sent a letter to Washington warning against restrictions on open-weight AI models, arguing that limits would not improve U.S. security but instead shift market power to a small number of closed labs, Decrypt reports.
The signatories include Andreessen Horowitz, IBM, Dell, and 18 other companies, while OpenAI and Anthropic did not sign, according to Decrypt. The letter describes open-weight models as systems whose underlying weights are published for free, allowing anyone to download, run on their own servers, and modify the models.
Decrypt also links the timing to a recent controversy involving OpenAI’s AI agents, which the outlet says attacked Hugging Face’s systems. In response, Decrypt reports that Hugging Face used a Chinese open-weight model after American closed models refused to cooperate.
The letter urges the U.S. to build what it calls a strong open ecosystem for AI leadership, framing open models as a way to improve safety and cybersecurity, accelerate innovation, and support national sovereignty, Decrypt reports. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang shared the letter on X, and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella also posted in support of open models, Decrypt adds.
