Pakistan and Iran weigh a China-backed path to US talks
China-backed diplomacy would aim to restart US-Iran negotiations, with a pause in military attacks described as a non-negotiable condition.
Pakistan and Iran are exploring a possible route to renewed negotiations with the United States under a new diplomatic initiative supported by China, according to Reuters, citing sources familiar with the talks.
Pakistan’s foreign minister, Mohammad Ishaq Dar, discussed the initiative with Chinese officials last week, as Islamabad reportedly reviews ways to facilitate resumption of US-Iran talks aimed at ending the regional conflict.
A Pakistani government official told Reuters that China is concerned about the impact of Iran’s attacks on other Gulf states and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz on Chinese interests. China is described as Iran’s largest trading partner and the main buyer of Iranian crude oil, making disruptions to regional trade and energy flows significant for Beijing.
Sources also cautioned that major obstacles remain, including a reported view that halting ongoing military attacks is a non-negotiable condition before diplomatic talks can restart. Iran’s Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni visited Islamabad within the past ten days, meeting Pakistan government officials and Army Chief Asim Munir, according to official Pakistani statements.
