RWE’s Nordseecluster A delivers first power to Germany’s grid
The project’s first turbine was installed last month, and Nordseecluster A targets full commissioning in early 2027 after 44 Vestas turbines are installed.
RWE said its Nordseecluster A offshore wind farm has delivered electricity to the German grid for the first time after installation of its initial turbine.
The 1.6GW Nordseecluster A project is located about 50km north of Juist in the German North Sea, and power from the turbines will be sent to two offshore substations, where it will be converted to the required transmission voltage before being transported to the mainland via the grid operator’s converter station.
Nordseecluster A is the first phase of the broader Nordseecluster project and is expected to ultimately deliver 660MW once fully linked to the grid, with completion targeted for early 2027. Installation activity is under way using DEME’s installation vessel Norse Wind, with 44 Vestas turbines being installed and testing and commissioning carried out incrementally as work progresses.
RWE Offshore Wind CEO Sven Utermöhlen said the milestone shows progress as planned, and that once fully operational the project will support Germany’s energy security while helping decarbonize industry. RWE said the Nordseecluster project is a partnership with Norges Bank Investment Management, which holds 49%, and that Nordseecluster B is planned to add a further 900MW with foundation installation scheduled for next year.
