Saudi strikes Houthi targets in Hodeida as Red Sea tensions flare
The Saudi-led coalition said its strikes were in response to attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea, after the Houthis announced a maritime blockade impacting shipping routes.
Saudi Arabia carried out airstrikes on Houthi military targets in Hodeida on Friday, with rebel-linked reporting saying two people were injured, according to Agence France-Presse as cited by SCMP Economy.
The Saudi-led coalition said it hit Houthi sites and destroyed targets, warning the actions were aimed at protecting commercial vessels amid attacks tied to a renewed Houthi maritime blockade, the report said.
SCMP Economy added that a Yemeni security source cited a naval base in Hodeida and a military camp on Kamaran island among the targets, after a recent flare-up that followed an attack on a Saudi ship.
The dispute threatens the conditions of a 2022 truce between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis, which has held despite expiring, and it raises concerns for global trade flows given the report's focus on Red Sea shipping and Saudi Arabia's role as the top oil exporter, with a parallel blockade affecting the Strait of Hormuz.
