Tornado damages industrial site in Batam, Indonesia, injures worker
The wind vortex struck around 10am, tore off roofing and workers’ shelters, and authorities said one worker suffered a minor injury.
A tornado struck an industrial site in Batam, Indonesia, tearing roofing from workshop facilities and sending workers running for cover as dark clouds formed, according to Indonesian media coverage cited by the South China Morning Post.
The short-lived wind vortex, described locally as a puting beliung, hit VME Process in Tanjung Sengkuang, Batu Ampar, at about 10am on Wednesday, damaging workers’ shelters and scattering construction materials across the site.
Batu Ampar police chief Amru Abdullah said there were no fatalities, while MetroBatam reported that one worker suffered a minor injury and received treatment from the company’s occupational safety team.
Police remained on site after the tornado subsided to keep people away from scattered materials that could still pose a danger, as the company and relevant authorities assessed losses and cleared debris through Wednesday afternoon.
