Trump likely to push tariff war as Iran conflict drags on

South China Morning Post reports that Trump’s foreign policy posture is set to shift toward renewed tariff pressure on China, driven in part by constraints from the ongoing conflict in Iran.

According to SCMP Economy, Iran’s refusal to capitulate has left the White House with an ongoing obligation to stay engaged in the Persian Gulf, even as the war remains broadly unpopular and faces resistance within Trump’s own base.

The outlet also links the tariff push to political timing, saying the White House may want to limit the inflationary fallout of the Iran conflict ahead of the November midterm elections, with midterms due in four months.

SCMP Economy adds that, over the coming months, efforts to China-proof US supply chains are expected to influence foreign policy, though it doubts that these efforts will produce lasting success.
