Trump vows probe into EU after fines against major US tech firms
The move follows an EU antitrust fine of €890 million for Google and comes amid a broader tariff push that included new 10% to 12.5% levies on 60 trading partners, including the EU.
BBC Business reports that President Donald Trump said the US will launch an investigation into the European Union and threatened new tariffs in response to EU fines targeting major American technology companies.
The European Commission recently fined Google €890 million, and Trump said any penalties should be “entirely reversed,” adding that the EU would “pay a very big price.” He also referenced investigations involving Apple, Meta, and Amazon.
Trump said the US would immediately initiate a Section 301 investigation, citing alleged unfair practices by European regulators and arguing they were “robbing American companies.” Section 301 gives the Office of the US Trade Representative authority to investigate potentially unfair trade practices.
The tariff threat came one day after Trump announced new tariffs on 60 trading partners, including the EU, the UK, and China, ranging from 10.0% to 12.5%. Google said it has worked to comply with the EU’s Digital Markets Act, while expressing concerns about the impact of recent European Commission decisions, according to a statement shared with the BBC.
