UK plans new Manchester hub to accelerate devolution and growth
The Manchester office, dubbed “Number 10 North,” is set to open Friday and will focus on accelerating devolution as part of Burnham’s effort to push resources beyond London.
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham is set to open his newly created northern office in Manchester on Friday, as he tries to reverse decades of England’s power and resources being concentrated in London, according to SCMP Economy.
Burnham, who replaced Keir Starmer in 10 Downing Street on Monday, said the plan is meant to put “more power into every postcode” to spur economic growth, and he criticized London-based government departments for engaging in “fighting turf wars.”
SCMP Economy reports that the office, branded “Number 10 North,” will be responsible for accelerating devolution, and Burnham said it would represent the biggest rebalancing of power in the country.
His office also said he aims to work in Manchester at least one day per week, describing the hub as a “situation room for growth.”
