UK retail sales rise 1.0% in June, GBP/USD slips

ONS data showed core retail sales excluding auto motor fuel increased 1.1% month over month, and annual retail sales accelerated to 4.2% from 3.5% in May.

UK retail sales in the United Kingdom rose 1.0% month over month in June, after increasing 1.2% in May, according to data published by the Office for National Statistics, with expectations for June having been for a decline of 0.3%.

The ONS also reported that core retail sales, which exclude auto motor fuel, rose 1.1% month over month in June versus a prior increase of 1.2%, compared with an estimated -0.4% outcome. Annual retail sales climbed to 4.2% in June from 3.5% in May, above expectations of 2.3%.

Core annual retail sales jumped 5.4% in June compared with 4.9% in May, and the release came in above consensus for the annual readings.

In an initial reaction to the softer retail sales data, HousingWire said the British pound edged lower, with GBP/USD trading down 0.02% on the day at 1.3312 as of writing.
