Wildfires prompt national emergency in Spain and mass evacuations

Spain’s interior ministry took charge of firefighting coordination as the evacuations expanded.

Spain declared a national emergency after wildfires forced the evacuation of about 10,000 people in the central region of Madrid, according to SCMP Economy. In southern France, roughly 40,000 people also fled wildfire areas.

In France, the blaze had already burned through more than 10,000 hectares, and the French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said it was the largest fire of the season. He also said there were no reported casualties.

SCMP Economy reported that Spain’s emergency response meant the interior ministry, which oversees police and security forces, assumed responsibility for coordinating firefighting efforts across Spain’s regions as multiple blazes intensified during a heatwave.
