Carbon capture and storage faces growing doubts after project failures

The technology, once pitched as a way to cut emissions from hard-to-abate industries, has drawn skepticism as some CCS projects have failed to perform.

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) rose in prominence during the Covid-19 period, as governments and private firms pledged support for a broader green transition, OilPrice reports. The premise was that CCS could help decarbonize industries that cannot easily swap to renewable energy in the near term, by capturing carbon dioxide at emission sources and then transporting it for storage or burial underground.

OilPrice describes CCS as an umbrella that includes conventional installations as well as direct air capture (DAC), which removes CO2 directly from the atmosphere. As decarbonization pressure increased, companies invested in CCS to reduce emissions while evaluating longer-term pathways.

However, the outlet says skepticism has increased in recent years as multiple CCS projects have not performed as expected. OilPrice adds that critics argue firms may be relying on capture solutions rather than cutting emissions at the source.
