Solar overtakes wind to become a larger share of global electricity in 2025
The Statistical Review of World Energy estimates global electricity generation rose to about 32,202 TWh in 2025, with solar generation reaching 2,811 TWh.
Solar generation surpassed wind for the first time as a source of global electricity, underscoring the accelerating shift toward renewables, according to OilPrice citing the Statistical Review of World Energy.
The outlet says worldwide electricity generation reached about 32,202 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2025. Hydroelectricity, wind, solar, and other renewables combined produced roughly 10,749 TWh, with hydropower still the largest renewable contributor at 4,479 TWh.
OilPrice reports that solar reached 2,811 TWh in 2025 and became the fastest-growing major component within the global renewable power supply. It also notes that hydropower accounted for 13.9% of worldwide electricity generation.
The piece frames the change as increasingly hard to dismiss as a distant prospect, pointing to data showing solar arriving in real time as power systems incorporate more renewable capacity.
