More than 200 researchers sign open letter urging AI institutions
The letter was backed by economists and AI researchers from the US, Canada, and Europe, with no signatories listed from China despite China’s role in frontier model development.
The South China Morning Post reports that more than 200 leading economists and AI researchers, including 16 Nobel laureates, signed an open letter organized by the Stanford Digital Economy Lab warning that artificial intelligence could drive an economic transformation bigger than the Industrial Revolution but on a much faster timeline.
In the letter, signatories urged decision makers to act now to build institutions capable of steering the transformation, describing the challenge as urgent due to the speed of change.
The SCMP also highlighted that the signatory list is heavily weighted toward the United States and Canada, with the remaining signatories coming mostly from Europe, and with no names listed from China.
The outlet argued the omission reflects an information gap, pointing to the fact that China is home to roughly half of frontier model development and has among the fastest AI adoption rates, and said studying AI without China would miss key parts of the transformation.
