Sberbank to launch crypto trading infrastructure and digital depository by Dec. 1

The program is designed to move crypto custody, settlement, and public exchange trading into Russia’s regulated system, with stricter intermediary rules starting in July 2027.

Sberbank, Russia’s largest bank, plans to build cryptocurrency trading infrastructure and launch a digital depository by Dec. 1 to support a regulated crypto market, according to CoinDesk.

New rules for crypto trading, custody, and settlement in Russia begin on Sept. 1, with requirements that transactions go through licensed intermediaries slated to apply from July 2027. Sberbank’s depository is expected to record clients’ ownership of cryptocurrencies and process most transactions off the underlying blockchain, while the bank will run active wallets for client deposits, withdrawals, and transfers.

CoinDesk reports that public crypto exchange trading in Russia will be limited to assets meeting liquidity and market capitalization thresholds tied to Bank of Russia criteria. The framework sets minimum average market capitalization above 5 trillion rubles, about $64 billion, and average daily volume above 1 trillion rubles, about $12.8 billion, measured over two years.

The reporting adds that crypto payments for goods and services inside Russia remain prohibited. Sberbank’s push also follows Federation Council approval of a law regulating cryptocurrency trading through licensed brokers, exchanges, asset managers, and depositories, and it builds on earlier steps to bring crypto under regulation, including a 2024 law covering mining and crypto-based cross-border settlement.
