Chinese film about Taiwan reunification faces backlash in mainland China
The future of a mainland Chinese film centered on Taiwan reunification is facing uncertainty amid criticism from nationalistic voices, according to SCMP Economy.
The film, titled The Belief, tells a Qing dynasty era story in 1683 when Emperor Kangxi ordered Shi Lang, the admiral of the Fujian navy, to lead forces against the Kingdom of Tungning, a polity that considered itself part of the Ming dynasty.
The battle, known as the Battle of Penghu, resulted in Taiwan coming under Qing rule, the outlet said. The film’s theme of bringing a self governed Taiwan under Beijing’s direct control appears to align with current Beijing policy.
SCMP Economy also reported that the movie had early signs of official support, including co producers tied to the propaganda department of the Fujian provincial committee of the Communist Party, as described on government websites.
