India CBDT issues crypto reporting guidelines for exchanges under 2025 law

The guidance clarifies reporting duties under existing tax rules, based on the OECD’s Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework adopted internationally through the G20.

India’s Central Board of Direct Taxes has issued a guidance note aimed at helping crypto-asset service providers meet reporting requirements under the Income-tax Act, 2025, according to LiveMint Markets.

The CBDT said the note does not create a new tax regime for virtual digital assets, but instead provides clarity on how exchanges and other intermediaries should report crypto transactions in line with existing tax laws.

The guidance also reflects India’s adoption of the OECD’s Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework, a global system intended to support the automatic exchange of tax-related information on crypto-assets among participating countries.

In the note, CBDT Chairman Ravi Agarwal linked the framework to addressing tax evasion risks posed by the ability to issue, hold, and transfer crypto assets outside traditional financial systems and across borders, and said the guidance is meant to explain obligations for reporting crypto-asset service providers.
