Iran says it made progress in Oman talks on Strait of Hormuz management
Negotiations in Tehran focused on operational mechanisms for safe shipping through the strait, with talks ongoing after prior disputes over possible service fees.
Iran said it made progress in talks with Oman on how to manage the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint vital to oil and gas shipping for both countries, according to SCMP Economy.
The Iranian foreign ministry said several rounds of negotiations took place in Tehran on Friday and Saturday between Iranian and Omani deputy foreign ministers, with the discussions centered on shared principles and operational mechanisms to support safe passage of ships through the strait while respecting each side’s sovereign rights.
The outlet reported that Iran described the talks as useful and said both technical and political consultations would continue.
SCMP Economy also noted that earlier in June Oman and Iran discussed imposing service fees that Washington opposes, while Muscat said ships could transit through its waters, a position Tehran said led to escalation.
