Maria Corina Machado rejects US-backed Venezuela talks in August
Machado said the opposition would not participate in the talks’ design, development and operation, which are scheduled for August.
Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado said she will not take part in US-backed talks with the de facto government led by Delcy Rodriguez, with sessions scheduled for August, according to a statement published by Machado with Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia.
The SCMP Economy, citing the statement, said Machado and Gonzalez Urrutia indicated the opposition would not participate in the design, development and operation of the talks, adding that those promoting the process should inform the country of its objectives, method and timeline.
Machado also defended Gonzalez Urrutia’s claim of victory in Venezuela’s disputed 2024 presidential election, in which Nicolas Maduro was declared the winner amid allegations of fraud.
In mid-July, Rodriguez’s interim government and a group of former opposition members of parliament from the 2015 to 2020 term announced a work plan focused on strengthening democracy in the country.
