Netanyahu clashes with New York mayor over ICC war-crimes claims
Netanyahu said he plans to attend the UN General Assembly in New York in September despite the mayor encouraging federal authorities to pursue an ICC arrest warrant.
Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu accused New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani of “fomenting hate,” after Mamdani urged the federal government to pursue arrest over International Criminal Court war-crimes claims related to the Gaza war if Netanyahu were to visit New York for the United Nations General Assembly, according to SCMP Economy and an Associated Press account.
Netanyahu said Mamdani, who previously suggested the city lacks legal authority to execute an ICC warrant, is not welcome in his view for the role he has taken, and he said he intends to be in New York in September to address world leaders at the annual UN gathering.
Mamdani had said last week that New York City does not have legal authority to execute an ICC arrest warrant, but he encouraged federal authorities to act. Netanyahu pushed back in remarks carried by Fox News Channel’s Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo.
The dispute comes amid heightened polarization around Netanyahu tied to Israel’s war in Gaza, which followed the October 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel by Hamas militants, the outlet reported.
